Sometimes Accidents Happen...

As careful of a driver as you are, and as slow as you drive, unfortunately, accidents do happen. Winnie and Phinn are more than happy to give you tips on protecting your car and helpful safety ideas, but today they wanted to give you some pointers on what to do after an accident.

  1. Stop your car and see if there are any injuries. Remember, you shouldn’t move your car after any accident, but make sure you’re clear of danger from oncoming traffic.
  2. Call the police and tell them where the accident is, and if there are any injuries.
  3. Call a tow truck, and take steps to protect your car from more damage, and let other drivers know that you’re in an accident. Most roadside kits you can purchase contain road flares or reflective emergency signs.
  4. Ask the police for a copy of the accident report. This often times can help expedite the claims process.
  5. Gather information from the other driver. Important information you’ll need is:
    1. Name and address of the driver (and owner, if the driver does not own the vehicle) as well as any passengers
    2. Year make and model of the vehicle
    3. License plate numbers
    4. Driver’s license numbers
    5. Insurance carrier & agent

If you have an accident with an object or a parked car, try to find the owner. If you cannot locate them, leave a note with your name, address and a contact number. Keep details of the accident handy for when they call you.

As always, your agent at Coffey Insurance will help you through every step of the claims process to help you out in this unfortunate situation!

Until next time...
